Through the Kansas Judicial Access to Justice Grant, KHD now offers civil legal services focusing on eviction and tenant/landlord cases in Douglas County.

Shawnee County

Formerly known as Topeka Family Legal Project

The Topeka Family Legal Project provides free legal assistance for Shawnee County families with minor children facing legal challenges related to housing, education, public benefits, and other civil legal matters. See below for more information regarding specific services the project may be able to provide.

Families in need of civil legal assistance who live in Shawnee County and are caring for at least one minor child in the home are encouraged to apply for the TFLP. Our grant provider sets eligibility requirements.

Housing

  • Eviction prevention and defense

  • Security deposit return

  • Requiring landlords to make necessary repairs

Education

  • Request an evaluation for an individual education plan (IEP) or 504 plan for a student with unmet educational needs

  • Ensure compliance with an existing IEP or 504 plan

  • Provide legal advice and early representation to families when a child is alleged to be truant

Income Support and Security

  • Public Benefit appeals, application assistance, and system navigation with the following programs:

    • KanCare (Medicaid)

    • Food assistance (SNAP/food stamps/EBT)

    • LIEAP energy assistance

    • TANF cash assistance

    • Child care assistance

  • Garnishments and Debt Collection
